Breast Cancer Awareness the focus this weekend in South Australian softball

Published Wed 09 Nov 2022

This weekend, softball diamonds across Adelaide will be awash with pink as the Adelaide Clubs Competition hosts its annual Breast Cancer Awareness Round.

Created by members of the Glenelg Rebels in 2010 with the first Breast Cancer Awareness Game, the club has helped to raise over $20,000 and the initiative is now supported by every club in the Adelaide Clubs Competition.

This year’s fundraising beneficiary is So Brave, Australia’s Young Women’s Breast Cancer Charity. So Brave are committed to raising breast cancer awareness for young women and educating all women to be breast aware through positive and empowering experiences. Since 2016 the charity has distributed over $115,000 for breast cancer research, and 54 young women diagnosed with breast cancer have participated in a Model Ambassador program.

Previous beneficiaries of the Breast Cancer Awareness Round include the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the McGrath Foundation.

The Breast Cancer Awareness Round is headlined by the game between Glenelg and Walkerville at the West Beach Softball Complex. The Swinstead Cup is awarded to the player who epitomises the fighting spirit of someone battling breast cancer during the game, and A-Grade players for both teams wear unique pink uniforms and pink accessories.

Supporters can purchase pink merchandise at the Glenelg game, with pink cupcakes and cookies available at every club game, with Glenelg, Walkerville, West Torrens, Sturt, Port Adelaide, Seacombe, Hills and Southern Districts lending their support to the fundraising effort.

The Glenelg v Walkerville fixture takes place at 2pm this Saturday (November 12) at West Beach Softball Complex.
