Where It All Began: Modball is a Staple of Youth Softball in South Australia

Over the past month, the state’s best has been firing every week in the Softball SA Premier League, in their quest to claim the Advertiser Shield. But the talent showcased in our weekly broadcasts had to start somewhere. For many at the top level, their softball journey began in the junior ranks, climbing through the age groups playing T-ball or the state’s other youth format, Modball. Magpies Walk It Off

IN THE BATTLE for top spot, Port Adelaide scored two runs off the last play of the day to beat Sturt 4-3 in Premier League Softball at West Beach Parks on Saturday. With two out and loaded bases in the final dig, the Magpies were trailing by one run when Johanna Grauer hit the ball into the outfield, where it wasn’t caught and allowed two runners to score, which gave Port Adelaide the victory.

Big Pitchers Battle

THE STORY OF Wednesday night’s battle between West Torrens and Hills was the superb pitching duel between the Eagles’ Steph Trzcinski and Heat’s Georgia Hood. At the end of the day Trzcinski got the win 2-0, but Hood was arguably the best player on the diamond, as she had an outstanding pitching line and batted 1000.

Rebels Strike Out Cancer

In 2010, Leanne Swinstead had just finished chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer when her daughter Erin and fellow Glenelg Rebel Asher Sloan came up with the idea to hold a softball game dedicated to raising the awareness of breast cancer. Rebel With a Cause

GLENELG REBELS HAVE WON! Yes, against the odds, Glenelg has finally tasted success in Premier League Softball, when it came back from trailing 0-4 in the first inning to win 5-4 over Hills at West Beach Parks on Saturday. It looked like Hills by how much early, as the Heat applied plenty of pressure in the opening frame, using the short game to perfection to score four runs.

Falcons Swoop on Magpies

BEHIND A COMPREHENSIVE 8-0 victory over Port Adelaide, Sturt has joined the Magpies at the top of the Premier League Softball table. With Millie Fidge in control from the circle – pitching five innings for three hits and eight strikeouts – it was left to the Falcons batters to ensure the victory.

Hills Big Bats Ignited

THE ‘HEAT’ WAS ON Port Adelaide in Premier League Softball, as Hills had two big innings on its way to a 12-3 victory over the Magpies. It was Port that looked the goods early, with a three-run opening frame, after hits to Emilia Dolphin and Jess Maslin, combined with a pair of Hills’ errors.

PORT ADELAIDE CONTINUED its outstanding season with a solid 5-1 mid-week victory over Walkerville in Premier League Softball. With 15-year-old Charlotte Dobrosczczyk doing the job from the circle, the Magpies are developing a great one-two pitching punch with Johanna Grauer. A pleasing aspect for Port is its range of batting strength, with a trio of hitters belting triples against Walkerville – and all were crucial.

WITH THE BATS working and Johanna Grauer in control from the circle, Port Adelaide proved too good for West Torrens in Saturday’s Premier League Softball, at West Beach Parks, with a 12-4 victory.

Sturt with a Finishing Touch

IN CONTROL MOST OF the way, Sturt exploded with a six-run final inning to beat Walkerville 11-1 in mid-week Premier League Softball, as West Beach Parks. Hits from Sarah Tonkin, Neve Adams (a triple) and Bel White gave the Falcons an early 2-0 lead in the first frame.

Magpies Hold on

PORT ADELAIDE REMAINED undefeated in Premier League Softball after hanging on for an exciting 3-2 victory over reigning premiers, at West Beach Parks on Saturday. The game was won in the third inning when the Magpies scored all of their runs, before the final 12 Port batters of the contest failed to reach base. Emilia Dolphin led off the third frame with an exciting triple, which seemed to energise her team-mates.

Trzcinski On Fire

WITH STEPH TRZCINSKI doing the job from the circle and with the bat, West Torrens broke through for its first win in the 2021-22 Premier League Softball season on Wednesday night, with an 11-2 victory over Glenelg Trzcinski was pitching a perfect game through to the bottom of the fifth inning, with Glenelg’s Caitlin Carroll breaking up the no-hitter with one out, then the next batter, Jade Peterson singled to bat Rebels’ first run in, to deny Steph a shut-out.

HIlls Pinch Points

IN A CLOSE CONTEST, Hills came from behind to beat reigning flag-winners Sturt 3-2 in Premier League Softball, at West Beach Parks on Saturday. Behind a stellar pitching performance from Georgia Hood, the Heat easily outhit Sturt but, until the fifth inning, could not put a score on the board, with the Falcons leading 2-0.

Port Early Pace-setters

A 7-0 MID-WEEK VICTORY over Glenelg at West Beach Parks has given Port Adelaide an edge at the top of the Premier League Softball ladder.

Sturt Win Thriller

IN A THRILLING Premier Softball League round one clash, reigning title-holder Sturt scored a walk-off 2-1 victory over West Torrens. From start to finish it was an absorbing pitching duel between the Falcons’ Millie Fidge and West Torrens’ Steph Trzcinski. Sturt managed to score a run in the first inning, after Sarah Tonkin led off with a single, and after two outs, Maddie Cameron eventually belted a long RBI double, after battling Trzcinski’s for six pitches.

Diamond sports unite in Riverland

Softball South Australia last week headed to the Riverland region roughly three hours north of Adelaide, to help facilitate two Come and Try Days together with Riverland Softball Association and Riverland Baseball League, promoting both softball and baseball
